Despite attacks, pilgrims in Iraq mark holy day (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraqi police boosted security as hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims converged Tuesday on the holy city of Karbala for a 10-day religious ritual that regularly draws deadly attacks by Sunni extremists.

On Monday, five bomb attacks against the Shiite pilgrims killed 21 people, revealing the troubling gaps that remain in Iraq's security just weeks before all American forces must be out of the country under a Dec. 31 withdrawal deadline.

The violence continued for a second day Tuesday as a mortar shell struck near a Shiite mosque in the northern city of Kirkuk, killing one person and wounding four others.

In Karbala, south of the capital, rituals went peacefully due to the tight security measures taken by local authorities, said provincial council member Iftkhar Hadi.

Around 33,000 Iraqi troops were protecting the 1 million worshippers in Karbala, said provincial police spokesman Maj. Alaa Abbas.

"Until now, there is no security breach in Karbala and it is a message to the terrorist groups that our security forces are now able to preserve stability and to defend our people," he said.

During the Ashoura ritual, Shiites seek to cleanse the spirit and scourge the body in honor of their founding saint.

Ashoura marks the anniversary of the death in the seventh century of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussein. His death in a battle outside Karbala sealed Islam's historic Sunni-Shiite split, which still bedevils the Middle East.

In Karbala, men wearing black or white robes pounded their chests, slashed their heads and beat their bloodied foreheads with the flat sides of swords and knives. Also, mourners were waving Shiite religious red and green flags as they were running toward the Imam Hussein holy shrine.

Karbala is 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Baghdad.

Shiite religious holidays like Ahsoura are routinely targeted by Sunni extremists who do not believe Shiites are true Muslims. Trying to stop those attacks remains especially difficult for the U.S.-trained Iraqi security forces, still struggling to protect their citizens more than eight years after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime.

Creative Finance That Won't Get You Arrested | Business 2 Community

Creative Finance That Won?t Get You ArrestedWhen you hear the words creative and finance together what comes to mind?

Tax evasion?
The Mafia?
Prison?

Fear not!

I?ve got some great ideas for you and they are all completely legal.

Right Brain Finance ? No Jail Time Involved

We?ll cover two common finance problems and then I?ll share my own creative finance primer. No bail bondsmen required.

Creative solutions to ?I can?t afford that?

  • Barter
Barter can be a great way to get the services you need now, even when you don?t have the capital. Personally I?ve had great experiences with barter. The key is to treat it like any other contract and client. You are simply cutting out the middle man (a.k.a. the Almighty Dollar). For a more detailed discussion read my blog post Geometric Barter
  • Negotiate Payment Terms
What if the payments for the product or service you need could be spread out? Perhaps a profit sharing arrangement could be made in place of making an up front payment. As I discuss in a guest post for Dr. Shannon Reece, I firmly believe that Everything is Negotiable.
  • CrowdFunding
Perhaps your business is looking to invest in a new technology platform, publish a book, or even promote a new product line. Then you may wish to consider crowdfunding. Inspired by crowdsourcing, crowdfunding allows small businesses and entrepreneurs to leverage the internet to raise funds for a specific purpose. I highly recommend www.Peerbackers.com as a great resource for running a campaign.

Creative solutions to ?Finance and numbers are BORING?

  • Give it a theme
Where do you usually see themes? At parties. Creating a theme for your finances or finance tasks can add some fun. For example, you could make it a murder mystery ? ?Who Murdered My Profits This Month??. How about a scary movie theme? I did this with my blog post on 3 Easy Ways to Tackle Your Taxes
  • Get others involved
Hate doing expenses? Have an expense party, virtually or in person. Sip cocktails and chat while filing away all those pesky receipts. Another idea is to co-opt a t(w)een in your life. Offer them a $50 iTunes card to get your filing in order.
  • Stalk The Numbers Whisperer ?
Yes that?s me. And yes I?m usually having that much fun? talking about finance. Now you can too!

Creative Finance Solutions Primer

That?s all great Nicole, but my problem is ________________.

No worries!

Here are some ideas to get those creative juices flowing. Remember when you brainstorm no idea is bad, silly or wrong. Write them ALL down. You never know which might lead to a viable solution.

  • Pretend your problem is a board game
What does the board look like? How do you win? What are the challenges? Rewards? Think Monopoly meets your small biz.
  • Pretend it?s an episode of Scooby Doo
Scooby and Shaggy always end up in dire circumstances, and then find their way out in crazy and creative ways. Imagine your problem as an episode, how would they react?
  • Open Pandora?s (music) Box
Music can really get my creativity cranked up. Visit Pandora.com for some free tunes randomly selected. Just enter one song or artist to get started.

Final Thoughts

What creative solutions have you used in finance? For any problem facing your business? How do you spark creativity in your work?

Young Jeezy On Gucci Mane Rift: 'It Was Nothing'

Jeezy tells 'RapFix Live' the whole thing started because he couldn't perform with Gucc while recovering from throat surgery.

It was all just a misunderstanding. After Young Jeezy appeared on Gucci Mane's 2005 track "Icy" but later refused to perform the record with Gucc, things between the two rappers got tense.

When the Snowman appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live," he revealed that what Gucci Mane didn't know was it was Jeezy's secret throat surgery that kept him from performing the record.

"When I met homey, he was just a guy hanging at the studio and he was fan. And I took to him and 'cause I just liked the way he got down, he was always cool, he was always excited," Jeezy said of how he and Gucci first met.

Jeezy — who was the hottest street rapper at the time — agreed to do "Icy" with Gucci Mane and even helped put the record together, he said. But soon after, he lost his voice, so when a request to perform the song came through to Jeezy's people, he declined without giving a reason. "Around that time is when I lost my voice," Jeezy revealed to Sway. "But nobody knew that I lost my voice but, like, maybe four of my homeboys. Def Jam didn't know, nobody knew.

"I think they got offended, but he didn't know that I lost my voice and just had surgery and was laying on a deathbed not knowing whether or not I would be able to speak again."

It is important to note that the two MCs have since called a truce. But before they made a peaceful resolution, Jeezy and Gucci traded subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle barbs on record. The drama even spilled onto the streets. "It just started then and turned into something else," Jeezy said. "I just felt like he was getting disrespectful about the situation because he wasn't being a businessman about it and understanding."

Jeezy, who is set to drop his fourth album, TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition, on December 20, told Sway that he believed the media made it out to be more than it was. "It's over now. But for what it's worth, it was nothing," he said.

In August, Gucci Mane had a similar stance when he sat with Sway on "RapFix Live." "On the strength of [the fact that] anything could have happened between not just me and him [but] between our camps, we just came to a sit-down of just respecting the fact that somebody can get hurt, and it ain't going to be us," Gucci said of the truce. "That's what made us do that."

Don't expect a future collaboration between the former foes, however. "I think we should just stay away from that totally," Jeezy said.

Are you glad Jeezy and Gucci settled things? Let us know in the comments.

Biologists deliver neutralizing antibodies that protect against HIV infection in mice

Biologists deliver neutralizing antibodies that protect against HIV infection in mice

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Over the past year, researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and around the world, have been studying a group of potent antibodies that have the ability to neutralize HIV in the lab; their hope is that they may learn how to create a vaccine that makes antibodies with similar properties. Now, biologists at Caltech led by Nobel Laureate David Baltimore, president emeritus and Robert Andrews Millikan Professor of Biology, have taken one step closer to that goal: they have developed a way to deliver these antibodies to mice and, in so doing, have effectively protected them from HIV infection.

This new approach to HIV prevention -- called Vectored ImmunoProphylaxis, or VIP -- is outlined in the November 30 advance online publication of the journal Nature.

Traditional efforts to develop a vaccine against HIV have been centered on designing substances that provoke an effective immune response -- either in the form of antibodies to block infection or T cells that attack infected cells. With VIP, protective antibodies are being provided up front.

"VIP has a similar effect to a vaccine, but without ever calling on the immune system to do any of the work," says Alejandro Balazs, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral scholar in Baltimore's lab. "Normally, you put an antigen or killed bacteria or something into the body, and the immune system figures out how to make an antibody against it. We've taken that whole part out of the equation."

Because mice are not sensitive to HIV, the researchers used specialized mice carrying human immune cells that are able to grow HIV. They utilized an adeno-associated virus (AAV) -- a small, harmless virus that has been useful in gene-therapy trials -- as a carrier to deliver genes that are able to specify antibody production. The AAV was injected into the leg muscle of mice, and the muscle cells then put broadly neutralizing antibodies into the animals' circulatory systems. After just a single AAV injection, the mice produced high concentrations of these antibodies for the rest of their lives, as shown by intermittent sampling of their blood. Remarkably, these antibodies protected the mice from infection when the researchers exposed them to HIV intravenously.

The team points out that the leap from mice to humans is large -- the fact that the approach works in mice does not necessarily mean it will be successful in humans. Still, the researchers believe that the large amounts of antibodies that the mice were able to produce -- coupled with the finding that a relatively small amount of antibody has proved protective in the mice -- may translate into human protection against HIV infection.

"We're not promising that we've actually solved the human problem," says Baltimore. "But the evidence for prevention in these mice is very clear."

The paper also notes that in the mouse model, VIP worked even in the face of increased exposure to HIV. To test the efficacy of the antibody, the researchers started with a virus dose of one nanogram, which was enough to infect the majority of the mice who received it. When they saw that the mice given VIP could withstand that dose, they continued to bump it up until they were challenging them with 125 nanograms of virus.

"We expected that at some dose, the antibodies would fail to protect the mice, but it never did -- even when we gave mice 100 times more HIV than would be needed to infect 7 out of 8 mice," says Balazs. "All of the exposures in this work were significantly larger than a human being would be likely to encounter."

He points out that this outcome likely had more to do with the properties of the antibody that was tested than the method, but adds that VIP is what enabled the large amount of this powerful antibody to circulate through the mice and fight the virus. Furthermore, VIP is a platform technique, meaning that as more potent neutralizing antibodies are isolated or developed for HIV or other infectious organisms, they can also be delivered using this method.

"If humans are like mice, then we have devised a way to protect against the transmission of HIV from person to person," says Baltimore. "But that is a huge if, and so the next step is to try to find out whether humans behave like mice."

He says the team is currently in the process of developing a plan to test their method in human clinical trials. The initial tests will ask whether the AAV vector can program the muscle of humans to make levels of antibody that would be expected to be protective against HIV.

"In typical vaccine studies, those inoculated usually mount an immune response -- you just don't know if it's going to work to fight the virus," explains Balazs. "In this case, because we already know that the antibodies work, my opinion is that if we can induce production of sufficient antibody in people, then the odds that VIP will be successful are actually pretty high."

Obama condemns storming of British embassy in Iran (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Declaring himself "deeply disturbed" by the storming of the British Embassy in Tehran, President Barack Obama strongly urged the Iranian government to hold those responsible to account.

"For rioters to essentially be able to overrun the embassy and set it on fire is an indication that the Iranian government is not taking its international obligations seriously," the president said.

Obama made his remarks at the beginning of an Oval Office meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

"That kind of behavior is unacceptable," Obama said, adding that the Iranian government has a responsibility to protect diplomatic outposts.

Hard-line Iranian students stormed the embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, bringing down the Union Jack flag, burning an embassy vehicle and throwing documents from windows in scenes reminiscent of the 1979 attack on the U.S. embassy there.

In a statement earlier, the White House urged Iran to condemn the incident, prosecute the offenders and ensure that no other incidents occur at either the British Embassy or any other mission in Iran.

The White House says the State Department is in close contact with the British government.
