Mystery Samsung GT-P8110 tablet passes through the FCC (update: likely not the P10)

Mystery Samsung GTP8110 tablet passes through the FCC

We know our fair share about the redesigned Galaxy Note 10.1, but wait -- what's this? Another Samsung tablet, the GT-P8110, has made a trip through the FCC to complicate what was looking to be a simple near-future strategy for the Korean tech giant. The likely Galaxy Tab variant isn't a familiar design by any stretch, with curved sides and the absence of a back antenna window pointing to a change in aesthetics. The wireless features of the 16GB model at the agency are the conservative elements -- there's just 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. Our only current hint at what the unknown slate might be is a mention of the 11.8-inch P10 in court evidence, but we don't know if that's what the P8110 represents or if the P10 is even on track for 2012, as Samsung's roadmap hinted in the past. We're not counting on Mobile Unpacked to shed any more light on the subject than the FCC does today.

Update: We're less inclined to think it's the P10, since the dimensions as we understand them wouldn't realistically support that 11.8-inch screen.

Auto Insurance | Motor industry facts

It is important to get the insurance for the car you are driving so that they will pay you for the damages during the accidents. The insurance companies provide the different types of the coverage for damaging the property, liability insurance and the accidental death of the person. The collision will pay for the damage of the vehicle; the comprehensive insurance will pay for the damages of the vehicle theft and vandalism. The liability coverage includes the lost wages and the cost of the medical bills during the vehicle accidents. The rental reimbursement is used for the coverage of the repair that takes place during the accidents. If the individual meets with the accident and do not have any insurance then they won?t get any charges for the uninsured. Even the driver can get the car insurance and they are used for the property damage liability. The bodily injuries are separate and they don?t pay for the vehicle damages. If you don?t have the right type of automobile insurance then they will sue your personal property. Some of the insurance companies will ask for the collateral whereas the others will not look into the bad credit history. Some of the States will not allow you to drive without the automobile insurance. Make sure that you have insurance when driving to the other cities. The motorist coverage depends on the driver?s insurance so that the collision insurance works well for the damages. The reputed insurance is necessary so that you can be safe with them.

Dvorak: Legal & illegal immigrants struggle, use welfare to make up ...

Using the 2010 Census Bureau statistics, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) released a detailed report that correlates high levels of illegal/legal immigrant poverty as a contributing factor for the increase in welfare programs in the U.S.

Take Arizona, the 2010/11 Census Bureau data revealed Grand Canyon State?s immigrant population is one of the poorest and least educated adding to the overburdened welfare rolls.

?There is considerable concern in this country about issues like poverty and the large uninsured population. But what has generally not been acknowledged is the impact of immigration on these problems,? explained Steven Camarota, CIS?s director of research. ?Absent a change in policy, 11 to 15 million new immigrants are likely to settle in this country in the next decade and may further exacerbate present problems.?

The new report highlighted the fact that 43 percent of immigrants who lived in the U.S. for 20 years were receiving government assistance; nearly double the rates of natural-born citizens.

?Look, we know a lot of these folks are going to be poor, we get it. But don?t tell the public it?s all going great, which is the story line I think a lot of people want to sell,? Camarota said in a Washington Times story. ?There is progress over time. Every measure shows improvement over time, but still, the situation does not look like we?d like it to look, particularly for the less educated. They lag well behind natives even when they?ve been here for two decades, and that is very disconcerting.?

The Arizona statistics outlined in the CIS report are particularly alarming.

? Arizona?s immigrant population (legal and illegal) grew 31 percent from 2000 to 2010 (857,000). Nationally the immigrant population grew 28 percent over the same period.

? Immigrant?s account for 13 percent of Arizona?s residents in 2010, and 17 percent of workers in the state.

? Of Arizona immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18), 37 percent live in poverty compared to 15 percent of natives and their children.

? Immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) account for 21 percent of the state?s overall population and 39 percent of all persons in poverty.

? Of Arizona immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18), 34 percent lack health insurance, compared to 16 percent of natives and their children (under 18). Immigrants and their children account for 37 percent of those without insurance in the state.

? Of households headed by immigrants in Arizona, 36 percent used at least one major welfare program, primarily food assistance and Medicaid, compared to 21 percent of native-headed households.

? Although Arizona?s immigrants are among the poorest in the country, their rate of home ownership is among the highest in the country at 59 percent. The rate for natives in the state is 66 percent.

? The lower socio-economic status of Arizona?s immigrants is not because most are recent arrivals. Their average length of residence in the United States is 20 years.

? One of the primary reasons so many immigrants in the state are poor is a large share arrive in the U.S. as adults with relatively low levels of education.

? Of adult immigrants (25 to 65) in the state 35 percent have not completed high school, compared to 7 percent of natives.

? The share of immigrants in the state with at least a bachelor?s degree is 21 percent, compared to 33 percent for natives.

? In 2010, 26 percent of students in Arizona public schools were from immigrant households. Overall, one third of public school students in the state speak a language other than English at home.

Camarota also estimates that one half of the immigrants in Arizona are in the country illegally, accounting for a little over 10 percent of Arizona?s population.

However, those numbers are just estimates. A Tucson National Border Patrol Council weekly report shed some light on senior Border Patrol officials enforcement policies in the Grand Canyon State. ?Agents are told to turn a blind eye to nearly everything outside mass murder, the lie that the ?border is secure? continues to be spread, and the American people fund all this shameful political gamesmanship with their tax dollars.?

PFT: Refs to point out replacement's poker past

Tennessee Titans running back Johnson sprints down the sideline for a gain while pursued by Houston Texans safety Quin and defensive end Bulman during their NFL football game in HoustonReuters

Chris Johnson might be coming off his worst season, but he?s not lacking for confidence.

In fact, Johnson thinks he?s faster than the fastest man alive.

The Titans running back told Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean he thought he could outrun Usain Bolt, under certain conditions.

?I feel like if I would have kept training for track I?d have a chance, but I play football and he runs track, so it?s totally different,? Johnson said. ?I think I could still probably beat him in the 40. If I actually trained for the distance he trained for, I think I?d have a chance.?

Bolt broke his Olympic record with a 9.63-second time to win his second straight 100 meters. He runs the 200 on Thursday (which you can watch on NBC).

Johnson hasn?t focused on track since high school, and he did run the 40 in 4.24 seconds at the combine in 2008, the fastest recorded since times were kept electronically in 2000.

They?ve talked about a race in the past, but it never moved past the talking stage.

?Training for football, we do a lot of short sprints ? we do 40s and 50s and things like that. We don?t really train like track athletes,? Johnson said. ?If a track athlete tried to come play football it would be totally different [for Bolt].?

There have been attempts to extrapolate what Bolt?s 40 time would be based on splits (and they?re anywhere from way faster to close to Johnson?s time), but the reality is we?re talking about apples and oranges.

Or, more accurately, the fastest apples and oranges in the world.

Standard Chartered: how Iran dealings could cost bank a N.Y. license, or worse

New York regulators have accused Standard Chartered of trying to hide some $250 billion in transactions with Iranian companies. Federal authorities are also reviewing the bank's transactions.

Since 2008, the United States has imposed a total ban on financial institutions dealing with Iranian firms.

But between 2001 and 2008, it was legal to do banking with Iran as long as a bank made sure the transactions were not improper.

On Monday, the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) accused Standard Chartered Bank, a large British banking organization with major operations in New York City, of ignoring the 2001-08 regulations and trying to hide some $250 billion in transactions with Iranian companies.

The DFS also accused Standard Chartered of acting like a ?rogue institution? and ordered it to appear on Aug. 15 before the state?s superintendent of banking to explain why it should not have its license to operate in New York revoked.

As if that isn't enough, the bank may have more trouble on its hands: Federal authorities are also reviewing the bank's transactions, and the Department of Justice could bring legal action.

What the DFS has done so far is part of a large-scale crackdown on financial institutions? dealings with Iran due to its controversial nuclear program. Last month, a US Senate report accused another large British bank, HSBC, of violating the 2001-08 rules. A senior executive at the bank subsequently resigned. Also last month, Congress reached agreement on a bill that would restrict the dealings of energy, shipping, and insurance companies with Iran.

?Global banks want access to US dollars and the US wire-transfer systems,? said Sen. Carl Levin (D) of Michigan at a hearing on the HSBC violations on July 20. ?They want the safety, efficiency, and reliability that are the hallmarks of US banking. But some banks abuse that privilege.?

The crackdown comes at time when financial institutions are under the microscope for transgressions. Federal bank regulators are still assessing what to do about the recent news that large banks, such as Barclays, had been involved in manipulating international interest rates in their favor. And regulators are closely monitoring JPMorgan Chase, which has reported that it lost billions of dollars in trades that went against it.

However, until the DFS action, Standard Chartered had largely stayed out of the headlines. The bank is best known for operating in emerging markets such as India and China. According to Financial Times bank rankings, the bank has about $800 billion in assets, making it the 21st largest in the world. The bank has 1,700 offices in 70 markets worldwide, the DFS says.

In 2011, the bank had income of $17.6 billion and a profit of $5 billion, the highest in its 150-year history. One major source of profits, according to the DFS, is clearing money for its foreign clients. It clears $190 billion per day in New York for major international companies involved in trade and finance.

The DFS, as part of its complaint, says it wants the bank to explain why it should not temporarily suspend its money-clearing operations pending a formal license revocation.

Romney trips over the word 'Sikh'

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is tripping over the word "Sikh" (seek) as he discusses the shootings in Wisconsin that killed six members of the religion Sikhism (SEEK-ism).

In Des Moines on Tuesday, Romney mispronounced the word "Sikh" (seek) as "sheik" (sheek), a word with an altogether different meaning. A sheik (sheek) is an Arab leader. Sikhs (seeks) trace their religion to South Asia.

A Romney spokesman says the Republican candidate simply misspoke while addressing supporters in Des Moines. The campaign notes that Romney pronounced the word correctly while making similar comments earlier in the day in the Chicago area.

Romney is calling the shootings at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin "tragic." He says the gunman appears to have been "motivated by hate" and that Sikhs are peaceful and loving.
