Baptist church townhouses approved in second go around

The townhouse development behind Ladner's restored and refurbished Baptist Church was approved for third reading by Delta Council on Tuesday evening.

It was the second application submitted for the development, which was initially rejected by council last December for being too modern for the heritage area.

The first proposal faced a 101-signature petition against what was to be Delta's first "green" rooftop on each of the three townhouses.

The new application is for three townhouses behind the Baptist Church at the corner of 47A Avenue and Delta Street. Each building will be three storeys in height with a two-car garage accessed from the rear lane.

Access to the front of the townhouses will be from a shared pedestrian walkway from Delta Street. The new design includes peaked roofs and balconies at the rear on the second storey.

Some of the same residents who opposed the first application were also against the new one, citing a problem with building height, parking, and a variance that will allow the building to abut to the sidewalk.

But council didn't agree with those concerns, pointing out that the development's height was within the zoning bylaws and that some leeway should be given for the developer by saving the heritage church.

Developer Steve Knoblauch said he spent $1 million on purchasing the land and lifting and moving the church to a new concrete foundation. Knoblauch has refurbished the church inside and out, including fixing the church tower.

"I just want to thank the proponent for the work on the heritage buildings in Ladner very, very much," said Coun. Jeannie Kanakos.

"There's something to be said for saving heritage buildings and there are not too many people that want to do that anymore or have the money or the ambition to do that," said Coun. Ian Paton, adding sometimes council has to "cut a little slack" to developers willing to do it.

"I think it's a real gem in the village of Ladner, the old Baptist Church."

The Baptist church was built in 1901-02 with the help of community volunteers, and a spire was added in 1910-11. Over the past hundred years the building had sunk into the earth six inches and the spire was leaning five inches out of plumb.

Windows 8 Grabs more Market Share, but so do Older Versions

Windows-8-Grabs-more-Market-Share,-but-so-do-Older-Versions-_394z296.jpg

Windows 8 keeps clawing its way up the market share charts, but not at the expense of Windows 7 or Windows XP.

According to Netmarketshare, Windows 8's market share now stands at 5.4 percent, up 0.3 percent from a month ago when it finally surpassed Windows Vista. Once again, Vista's market share declined last month, this time by about 0.38 percent, to a total of 4.24 percent.

Meanwhile, Windows 7 and Windows XP are holding strong. In fact, Windows 7's market share increased last month by 0.12 percent, and Windows XP saw a 0.02 percent bump in market share despite the looming end of XP support by Microsoft. Both Windows 7 and XP remain the most widely-used operating systems by far, with 44.49 percent and 37.19 percent of the market, respectively, according to Netmarketshare.

In other words, any market share that Windows 8 gained last month appears to be at the expense of Windows Vista.

While it's not surprising that users are eager to upgrade from the widely-panned operating system, getting people to switch from XP or Windows 7 may be tougher for Microsoft, especially among users who want to stick with a traditional desktop interface.

Windows 8.1 will make some concessions for those users, with the return of the Start button, a boot-to-desktop option, quicker access to advanced desktop functions, and a way to prevent modern-style menus from popping up during desktop use.

But ultimately, Microsoft and PC makers must convince the masses that they need to upgrade their hardware to touch-enabled laptops, hybrids, or desktops. Cheaper touchscreen devices could help on that front, but it'll likely be a while before the market share needle moves much for Windows XP and Windows 7.

Emmy Award-Winning Havoline Football Saturdays Episode 4 Airs This Weekend

This Week Spotlights Former College Greats Greg Olsen of Miami, Randall Cobb of Kentucky and Concussion Research at VT and UNC

Charlotte, N.C. ? Raycom Sports? multi-Emmy Award-winning summer television series, ?Havoline Football Saturdays,? continues its tenth season with Episode 4 this weekend.?The series, with six one-hour episodes, is hosted by Tim Brando and syndicated in 75 markets throughout the country.

This week?s show features former Miami Hurricane tight end Greg Olsen. After a stellar college career, the All-ACC selection was drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears. He was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2011, and had his most productive season as a pro this past season. But the challenges he faced on the field were overshadowed by traumatic news at home after one of the twins was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart defect. See how he and his wife Kara dealt with the news of their son?s health and how the Panthers family, helped them through a difficult time in their lives.

We also head home to Alcoa, Tennessee with Randall Cobb. The Green Bay Packers wide receiver began his career there, leading his high school to a 55-5 record and four state titles. He then played for the University of Kentucky, where he set the SEC single-season record for all-purpose yardage in 2010.? While he has quickly become an NFL star, he hasn?t forgotten his hometown as he hosts a camp for 250 kids back in Alcoa.

Concussions in football have been in the headlines, and two ACC schools have been leaders in concussion research. Virginia Tech began concussion studies in 2003 with sensor-equipped helmets to measure impact force. In addition to indicating concussion-force impact during a game, the research also led to VT instituting helmet ratings. Much like crash testing in the automotive field, these ratings have helped schools choose the best protection for players.

The University of North Carolina has also become a pioneer in the field of concussion diagnosis and analysis. Using a concussion effects balance assessment developed by UNC medical staff, players can be tested and cleared to safely return to the field. Both schools are leading the way to improve safety for football players.

The Son

Philipp Meyer's Texas epic tells a story that can stand alongside classics by Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy.

Eli McCullough chooses C in Philipp Meyer's highly acclaimed, brutal frontier novel, The Son. Meyer's first novel ?American Rust,? chronicled the slow death of a small Pennsylvania steel town and the evaporating of hopes of its two protagonists. ?The Son,? which seems certain to cement Meyer's reputation, takes on a bigger geography, but decline is still the theme. In the process, he's written a Texas epic that can stand alongside classics by Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy.

Kidnapped after a vicious attack on his family, Eli, or Tiehteti as the Comanche rename him, is the consummate survivor. (The 12-year-old doesn't waste much time grieving ? his bookish brother was an embarrassment, and his sister never liked him much.) Looking back at his long life from 1936, the centenarian tells a WPA interviewer about outliving both his biological and adoptive families and the frontier he adored.

?The Son? also follows two of Eli's descendants, Peter, who in 1915 is unable to stop the slaughter of his Mexican neighbors; and Jeanne, who at age 86 is lying on the floor of her home, unable to move and unable to remember how she got there. (Alarmingly, she can smell gas, and there seems to be a haze of smoke filling the room.) In the beginning, readers may resent any switch away from Eli, but Meyer jumps masterfully between eras, able to recreate a Comanche raid with as much detail as a boarding school sleepover, and the attendant perils of both.

When Eli was a child, ?the country was rich with life the way it is rotten with people today,? he tells WPA worker recording him on tape.

While he longs for the days when the grass was chest-deep, Eli acknowledges he's done his fair share to exploit the area's natural resources ? grabbing all the land he can, by fair means or foul, and first covering it with cattle and then oil rigs, a task his great-granddaughter carries on to advance the family fortunes.

?I don't have to tell you what this land used to look like. And you don't have to tell me that I am the one who ruined it,? Eli tells his Peter. ?But that is the story of the human race. Soil to sand, fertile to barren, fruit to thorns. It is all we know how to do.?

Eli's adopted father tries to teach him the importance of putting the tribes' lives ahead of his own, but he absorbs another lesson better: the only way to own a hunk of Texas is to take it from someone else. The waves of invasions, of course, had been going on since before his birth, as Toshaway points out. The Comanche had taken the area from the Tonkawa and then the Mexican and American settlers took it from them.

?The whites do not think this way ? they prefer to forget that everything they want already belongs to someone else,? Toshaway tells Eli. ?They all want to be rich, same as we do, but they do not admit to themselves that you only get rich by taking things from other people. They think that if you do not see the people you are stealing from, or if they do not look like you, it is not really stealing.?

Eli becomes an equal opportunity killer, as first a Comanche warrior, then a Texas ranger.

In 1915, Peter, a far more morally complicated man than his father, grapples with the fallout from that way of thinking, falling into self-loathing and depression. (There is, it should be noted, far more whining in Peter's chapters. He is, however, the McCullough least likely to gut you ? either literally or metaphorically.)

Appalled by the treatment of the Garcias, and the casual annexing of their land, Peter can't live with the colonel's justifications anymore.

?That is how the Garcias got the land, by cleaning off the Indians,? Eli tells him. ?and that is how we had to get it. And one day that is how someone will get it from us. Which I urge you to remember.?

Jeanne, on the other hand, adores her great-grandfather, the Colonel, and thoroughly absorbs his lessons in a way her cowboy-playing father never did:??The strong took from the weak, only the weak believed otherwise,? she thinks, alone in the family mansion.

She bucks society's expectations to become an oil baron, but it's as lonely an existence as her grandmother, who hoped to turn her into a pearl-wearing debutante, warned.?

?Men, with whom she had everything in common, did not want her around. Women, with whom she had nothing in common, smiled too much, laughed too loud, and mostly reminded her of small dogs, their lives lost in interior decorating and other people's outfits. There had never been a place for a person like her.?

While Eli remains the most compelling character in "The Son," Meyer skilfully weaves together all his time-traveling threads, as the events of one era pay bloody dividends in the next.

(AP) ? Germany canceled a Cold War-era surveillance pact with the United States and Britain on Friday in response to revelations by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden about those countries' alleged electronic eavesdropping operations.

Chancellor Angela Merkel had raised the issue of alleged National Security Agency spying with President Barack Obama when he visited Berlin in June. But with weeks to go before national elections, opposition parties had demanded clarity about the extent to which her government knew of the intelligence gathering operations directed at Germany and German citizens.

Government officials have insisted that U.S. and British intelligence were never given permission to break Germany's strict privacy laws. But they conceded that an agreement dating back to the late 1960s gave the U.S., Britain and France the right to request German authorities to conduct surveillance operations within Germany to protect their troops stationed there.

"The cancellation of the administrative agreements, which we have pushed for in recent weeks, is a necessary and proper consequence of the recent debate about protecting personal privacy," Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said in a statement.

A German official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the cancellation would have no practical consequences.

He said the move was largely symbolic since the agreement had not been invoked since the end of the Cold War and would have no impact on current intelligence cooperation between Germany and its NATO allies. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to publicly discuss the issue, said Germany was currently in talks with France to cancel its part of the agreement as well.

In March 2011, two U.S. Air Force members were killed and two others wounded when a gunman from Kosovo fired on a military bus at Frankfurt International Airport. The gunman told police he was motivated by anger over the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in Berlin, Ruth Bennett, confirmed that the agreement had been canceled but declined to comment further on the issue. Officials at the United Kingdom's embassy in Berlin couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Samsung allegedly inflating Galaxy S4 benchmarks, but the company denies the claims

It?s becoming increasingly clear that there?s a gap between synthetic benchmarks and real world usage on mobile devices, a truth particularly evident on the Samsung Galaxy S4. Out of the box performance for the handset left a lot to be desired when it first shipped, although things did improve with subsequent over-the-air updates. Anandtech has discovered why there?s such a large discrepancy, though, with the site claiming that Samsung is artificially boosting benchmark performance.

Here?s the technical explanation: the GPU found in the Exynos 5 edition of the Galaxy S4 is typically clocked?at 480Mhz, even when running extremely demanding mobile games. But when someone runs a specific benchmark on the handset - AnTuTu or Quadrant, for example - the GPU suddenly clocks itself up to 532Mhz. That number doesn?t seem to be attainable in other applications either, and what makes the discovery even more damning is a ?BenchmarkBooster? string buried in code on the phone.

Samsung has already responded to the allegations, saying that the boosted GPU performance is available to any app that needs it ?under normal conditions?. That would include full screen apps such as the camera, browser, and video player, but the company didn?t address the specific code strings that seem to target benchmarking apps.

At the end of the day, how your phone performs in the real world is all that matters. Benchmarking tools can prove to be good comparison tools for different handsets, but do the raw numbers really matter if you?re seeing smooth performance in your day to day usage?

One thing's for sure -?If the allegations are?true, it?s an extremely?deceptive move of Samsung part, especially when its flagship devices typically rank near the top of performance tests.

Filner Accuser Reluctantly Donated $200 to Help Pay Off Campaign Debt

According to Voice of San Diego, Sharon Bernie-Cloward, one of seven women who have publicly accused Filner of sexual harassment, made the donation as the?head of the San Diego Port Tenants Association. Campaign finance filings released Tuesday revealed Filner had more than $100,000 of campaign debt that was ultimately retired.?

Bernie-Cloward accused Filner of sexually harassing her in 2010 and ??groping her backside? after a campaign event in 2012 that left her fearful.?

?I was left there startled and fearful. In fact, I actually had someone walk me to my car that night,? Bernie-Cloward told KPBS last week.

Bernie-Cloward told Voice of San Diego that she felt compelled to send the donation because it was a part of her job representing business owners along the port tidelands.?

?It was a typical campaign check,? Bernie-Cloward told Voice of San Diego. ?My job is my job, and you?ve got to work with these people.?

She "reiterated that she reported the 2012 incident to the Port Tenants Association board when it happened" and "was reluctant to make her accusations public earlier than she did because the port tenants? PAC backed Filner?s opponent, Carl DeMaio."

?I guarantee you,? Bernie-Cloward said. ?If I came forward at that time, they would have said that I was just coming to get him.?

Announcer-Free TV? Detroit's Baseball Fans Say Yes, Please

Baseball fans often declare their love of the game's rhythm, its quiet pauses and bursts of action. For such people, watching a game on TV can be a struggle, particularly if they're annoyed by the chatter of announcers. Fans in Detroit had another option last night: watching a TV broadcast that included only the natural sounds of the ballpark.

On its "Plus" channel, Fox Sports Detroit offered fans a feed of Tuesday night's game pitting the Tigers against the Washington Nationals, titled "Natural Sounds at Comerica Park." The program's only voices came from the field and the stands.

The broadcast was enhanced by "extra microphones around the park so viewers can hear more of the sounds of baseball ? the bat cracks, ball popping in the mitt, vendors chiming in from the stands and the crowd's reaction to every play on the field," said Fox Sports Detroit's general manager, Greg Hammaren.

As the Awful Announcing site notes, the move was a hit with many viewers, who took to Twitter to call the broadcast "awesome." Others said, "Wish it was like this every game."

The experiment by Fox Sports Detroit follows in the footsteps of the famous NBC broadcast from 1980, when an NFL game between the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins was aired without announcers providing play-by-play commentary or analysis.

And as large and complex events such as the Olympics and soccer's World Cup broaden their online offerings, fans can often find live streaming video of competitions that include only the ambient sounds of the arena.

Fox Sports Detroit will have another announcer-free game at the end of August. But Awful Announcing's Matt Yoder says fans shouldn't expect to see such games on a regular basis.

"There's a reason the play-by-play man has had a job for decades ? game broadcasts usually need a narrative and layer of context to what's happening on the field," Yoder writes. "More importantly, we'd be out of a job."

Still, he adds, "one also wonders if Fox would ever look into the 'natural sounds' feed for the World Series given the, ahem, 'popularity' of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver with many baseball fans."

Chinese Army?s ?Call of Duty? Clone Game Opens to the Public Tomorrow

China PLA game opens to public

The Call of Duty style online game created by the Chinese military in 2011 is now being made available to the public. Called Glorious Mission Online, it will come online for Chinese gamers tomorrow (Thursday) in a deal with gaming company Giant Interactive (NYSE:GA). The online gaming page is here.

Not entirely coincidentally, tomorrow is August 1, which is the anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People?s Liberation Army (PLA). It?s a good time for Chinese gamers to take up arms against those dastardly Americans ? in the game, of course.

China army game Glorious Mission opens to public

The new homepage for the PLA game.

Glorious Mission surfaced almost by accident in 2011 when a state TV program showed Chinese soldiers training using a computer game that no-one had seen before ? and they were apparently locked in mortal combat with the US army.

My colleague Charlie has been following the progress of the game ever since, and saw that enthusiastic gamers were pirating Glorious Mission last year ? so there?s a market for the game, it seems.

It?s not clear if the public version of the game is exactly the same as the one PLA soldiers have been using.

Over the last few years, there has been a significant shift in how we consume digital content from music and movies to books and television (TV). The intersection of new technologies, devices and high speed networks has served to accelerate that change, particularly for TV. If we were to hop into the way back machine, it?s hard to believe that TV consisted of only a handful of channels, programming ceased at some point each night and the picture was in black & white, not color let alone 3D. Yet for all the changes we have seen, the recent past and the coming future are poised to radically shift TV to the point that other than live sporting events and maybe news, we may not be able to recognize broadcast TV any longer.

Video on demand (VOD) has become a staple of the cable companies ranging from Comcast Comcast and Verizon Communications Verizon Communications to Cablevision Cablevision and Charter Communications Charter Communications. Streaming services from not only Netflix Netflix and Apple Apple, but also from the aforementioned Comcast and Verizon Communications (check their iPad apps) and HBO as well as others is fueling not only the time shifting consumption of content we have come to rely on in this post Tivo world, but also fostering place-shifting as well. Watch any teen or ?tween and they firmly expect to watch what they want, when they want but where they want and on the device they want.

With smartphone penetration well past the tipping point and tablet sales maturing, many companies are turning their sights on the next battlegrounds. One of them is the Connected Car and another is the Connected Home. Inside that Connected Home, there will be several battlegrounds ? security, home automation (temperature, appliances and so on) and the living room. How that all shakes out has yet to be determined, but rest assured while companies like AT&T, Verizon, and ADT are working on the first few, Apple, Google Google, Microsoft Microsoft, Slingbox, Roku and others are targeting the living room as part of their digital content offering.

Apple TV. Apple has shipped more than 13 million Apple TV units and at the recent D11, CEO Tim Cook shares that TV is not just a hobby, but rather the company has a ?grand vision.? Rumors over the next iteration of Apple TV continue and before too long that rumor mill is likely to kick into high gear once again as Apple prepares for the official unveiling of iOS 7. Like the soon to be released iRadio, Apple TV is a work in progress, which means we keeping our eyes and ears open on this digital content streaming and portal device. Combined with the full power of Apple?s digital hub ? iTunes ? it could be a powerful new weapon for Apple as well as a very sticky one for consumers.

Google?s Chromecast. Last week, Google introduced a potential game changer to media consumption in the form of Chromecast, a $35 thumb drive sized device that that plugs into the back of your TV, allowing you to stream content from any device. Well almost any device. If you have an Android tablet or smartphone, an iPad or iPhone, use Chrome for Mac and Windows then you are in luck. If you use a BlackBerry or Windows Phone,? at least for now you will be stuck using either a PC or tablet. This just introduced product has already sold out online at Best Buy, Amazon.com, and Google Play.

Aereo ? one to watch. While both Apple TV and Chromecast allow for the streaming of TV and other digital content, it is Aereo that has or at least should have the major broadcast ? TV networks ? Walt Disney Walt Disney?s ABC, CBS CBS, Comcast?s NBC and News Corp News Corp.?s Fox ? concerned if not? worried.

Backed by IAC?s Barry Diller, Aereo is a Web video service that offers local TV channels and a DVR-like service, which can be viewed on a PC or Mac, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV or Roku device.? While Aereo doesn?t support Android as yet, given the existing support for Google?s Chrome browser one has to wonder how long until it and Chromecast are supported. Currently offered in New York, Boston and Atlanta, Aereo has plans to expand to another 20 markets, with Salt Lake City in August and Chicago in September.

Arguably, success at Aereo poses a problem for the broadcast industry in that it collects fees to the tune of billions by allowing cable networks access to local channels. Like any company that sees a high margin revenue stream under potential attack, last March, broadcasters filed two federal lawsuits accusing the service of violating copyright law. In March, a New York federal appeals court upheld a ruling in favor of Aereo. Given the fees and profits at stake, it?s more than likely we have not heard the last of this. I for one can?t wait to sample Aereo?s service as the company expands its footprint in the coming months.

How to invest in this? Whenever I see so many companies looking to compete in one market, I tend to step back and look at the food chain or ecosystem for those players that offer critical solutions vs. commodity components and serve many of the would be players. A great example of such a merchant supplier in the smartphone and tablet space is Qualcomm Qualcomm, which counts Samsung, Apple, LG, HTC and most if not all the other key players as customers.

In this digital content and Connected Home battleground, the teardown analysis on the latest Apple TV unit and on a Chromecast performed by iFixIt.com as well as similar analysis on the Roku 3 and the Slingbox 500 reveal key supplier to be Toshiba, Broadcom Broadcom, Marvell Technology Group Marvell Technology Group, Micron, Atheros (now owned by Qualcomm) and AzureWave (TPE:3694). Toshiba and Micron are supplier of NAND flash memory, while the key connective technologies are provided by Broadcom Broadcom, Marvell and Atheros/Qualcomm. It?s the latter group of companies that investors should be focusing on.

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)

(AP) ? Declaring child prostitution a "persistent threat" in America, the FBI said Monday that authorities had rescued 105 young people and arrested 150 alleged pimps in a three-day sweep in 76 cities.

The agency said it had been monitoring Backpage.com and other websites as a prominent online marketplace for sex for sale. Backpage.com said that it was "very, very pleased" by the raids and that if the website were shut down to the advertisements, the ads would be pushed to sites that wouldn't cooperate with law enforcement.

The young people in the roundup, almost all of them girls, ranged in age from 13 to 17.

The largest numbers of children rescued in the weekend initiative, Operation Cross Country, were in the San Francisco Bay and Detroit areas, along with Milwaukee, Denver and New Orleans. The operation was conducted under the FBI's decade-long Innocence Lost National Initiative. The latest rescues and arrests were the largest such enforcement action to date.

"Child prostitution remains a persistent threat to children across the country," Ron Hosko, assistant director of the bureau's criminal investigative division, told a news conference. "We're trying to put this spotlight on pimps and those who would exploit."

In Operation Cross Country, federal, state and local authorities cooperated in an intelligence effort aimed at identifying pimps and their young victims.

The FBI said the campaign has resulted in rescuing 2,700 children since 2003. The investigations and convictions of 1,350 individuals have led to life imprisonment for 10 pimps and the seizure of more than $3.1 million in assets.

In their efforts to identify child victims, investigators seek help wherever they can find it ? in some cases from adult prostitutes, Hosko said. He said almost all the victims in sweeps like the one over the weekend are girls and that the profiles of the victims cut across racial lines and boundaries of wealth.

Social media are a common denominator in many of the rescues.

"We are seeing it more and more, kids being put out on the street and being trafficked because of the Internet," said Detective Angela Irizarry of the Hayward Police Department, not far from San Francisco. "Many of these kids come from runaway or group homes and they feel like this is the only way for them to survive on the street."

She said her department identified three girls, ages 15, 16 and 17 and a woman seen dropping off two of the girls was arrested as a pimp. One of the girls was a runaway, another had been missing from a group home for several months and a third ran away off and on from her family's home, Irizarry said. The detective said she had not had a chance to speak with the girls and does not know how long they had been involved in prostitution, but that one of them "is denying any involvement of the individuals we had arrested for pimping. That is typical. Usually these girls don't immediately give up their pimps."

Irizarry said a multi-agency, cross-country effort was necessary because local police departments do not always have the resources to investigate tips about child sex trafficking.

Last year, five members of the Underground Gangster Crips contacted teens at school or through Facebook, DateHookUp.com or other online social networking sites, enticing the girls to use their looks to earn money through prostitution.

As for websites, Liz McDougall, the general counsel for Backpage.com, said that if that site were shut down to the advertisements in question, the information that can lead to the rescues would be lost to law enforcement because the ads would be pushed to "offshore uncooperative websites."

"We feel very strongly that we're doing the right thing, and we're going to continue to do the right thing and we congratulate the FBI and everybody with the task forces involved in the program," said McDougall.

In earlier sweeps, child prostitution victims have been recovered at major sporting events ? including the NCAA Final Four and Super Bowl, Hosko said.

In the 1990s, gangs took control of street prostitution across America; that forced pimps to move girls into sporting events where security existed, said Dr. Lois Lee, founder and president of Children of the Night, a nonprofit group that has rescued 10,000 children from prostitution since 1979.

Hosko said the plight of the young people often goes unreported to authorities because the children in many instances are alienated from their families and are no longer in touch.

In Oakland, Calif., police Lt. Kevin Wiley said authorities are "always afraid" for the girls.

"They usually get into this because they are running away from something else," said Wiley. "You're trying to find out what brought them into this lifestyle in the first place. It goes way beyond law enforcement to solve this epidemic."

Pimps operate wherever vulnerable potential victims can be found. Some are being recruited right out of foster care facilities, Hosko said.

For the past decade, the FBI has been attacking the problem in partnership with a private group, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

John Ryan, the head of the center, called the problem "an escalating threat against America's children."

The Justice Department has estimated that nearly 450,000 children run away from home each year and that one-third of teens living on the street will be lured toward prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home.

Congress has introduced legislation that would require state law enforcement, foster care and child welfare programs to identify children lured into sex trafficking as victims of abuse and neglect eligible for protections and services.

"In much of the country today, if a girl is found in the custody of a so-called pimp she is not considered to be a victim of abuse, and that's just wrong and defies common sense," Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said during a Senate Finance Committee hearing last month. Wyden co-sponsored the legislation with Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio.

Zynga Sheds Three Top Execs As Its New CEO Shakes Up The ...

In the last month, Zynga has quietly parted ways with three of its executive staff, early changes under the period of transition that the company?s new CEO, Don?Mattrick, is currently leading.

Bloomberg first reported the departure of?Nathan Etter, John Osvald and Jesse?Janosov. TechCrunch confirmed their collective exit with a source familiar with the matter.?Etter has already updated his LinkedIn page to reflect his new role as a vice president at Disney.

However, Osvald and Janosav have yet to update their digital profiles, which still list them as vice president-level executives at the social gaming company.

That Zynga is shaking up its management structure isn?t surprising, frankly. The company?s founder and then CEO Mark Pincus stepped down from that role, in an admission that things were unwell, and that his leadership hadn?t corrected the company?s course. The company ended up in its current situation because of the choices of its senior management. Some of those folks are now no longer with the firm.

It isn?t clear at this time if the three were fired, resigned, or some combination thereof. Mattrick, during Zynga?s second-quarter earnings call, stated that he intended to look at how the firm is ?deploying people at all levels of the company.? That process appears to be already under way.

In its most recent financial quarter, Zynga reported declining revenue, a net loss, and falling daily and monthly active users of its various gaming titles. The company has a sufficient cash position to grant it some time to rebuild itself, but not too much. The new question is who Mattrick will bring in to fill the roles that the departed trio left. And if they will become Microsoft talent, as well.

Wadah Khanfar Blasts Egyptian Military, Calls Out U.S. 'Hypocrisy,' Warns Of 'Collapse Of The Entire Region' (VIDEO)

Former Director General of Al Jazeera Wadah Khanfar joined me Monday for a wide-ranging conversation on the ongoing violence in Egypt, slamming the military's "horrific" crackdown on civilians and accusing the United States of hypocrisy, predicting both civil war in Egypt and the "collapse of the entire region" if there is no real U.S. intervention against military violence there.

Khanfar, whose HuffPost blog post last week focused on the Egyptian military's role in dragging the country closer to a civil war, said the unprecedented amount of violence the military has carried out against the people in recent days marks "a beginning of a new history where people will give up on democracy and will turn to defend themselves through violence."

Throughout the interview, Khanfar repeatedly used the word "coup," calling the recent images of civilians harmed by military "horrific" and saying that "the Arab world did not sleep [two nights ago] watching live the shooting and killing by the military of people who were not armed."

Khanfar, co-founder of the Sharq Forum and one of the most widely-respected journalists in the Arab world, predicted the situation in Egypt will have major consequences in an already volatile region.

"If this coup continues in Egypt, then we are not only in front of a dictatorship, a military dictatorship, but we are facing the collapse of the entire region," he said. "No government, no international power will be able to predict or even imagine what kind of consequences we are going to see in this region."

Khanfar said that Egyptian minister of defense Lt. General Abdul Fatah al-Sisi reminded him of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi by invoking the Bush administration's favorite phrase to frame Egyptian civilians as terrorist and thus justify violence against them.

"The [phrase] 'War on Terrorism' became very useful for our dictators," Khanfar said. "Today Sisi is imitating Muammar Gaddafi, who used the war on terrorism to put down people and put them in jail."

Ultimately, Khanfar blames the United States government for "putting security above freedom" and failing to stand up to restore democracy in Egypt. He said that Egyptian people see the US as unwilling to "call things as they are" and will ultimately hold America accountable if the violence persists.

"If the Americans, at this stage, do not take a bold stance against this coup and demand immediate restoration of the democratic process, I do believe the people in this region will put this burden of the collapse of democracy on American shoulders as well," he said. "If the Americans do not call this a coup, it will be seen as hypocrisy and another act to suppress the demands of the public in this part of the world."

Do you know the kitchen cabinet choices? - Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

Many owners are surprised to find so many styles of kitchen cabinets when you visit a store or home improvement store cupboard. The variety and number of options available can be overwhelming case. This variety, but also ensures that each homeowner can find a style to suit your personal taste.

Defines the style of kitchen units from different folders. The first is the wood used in construction. Owners can choose wood for their furniture based on color and texture, especially. Some styles are also painted. Options include:

Most wood can be finished natural or glazed. White cabinets can also be painted and glazed in an antique finish. Wood varies from one to another. Apr, for example, has a very prominent grain. Cherry and walnut are recognized as grains and colors of wood. The wood used to create the majority of companies in the USA is maple.

The most visible part of the cabinet. However, the party "box" is seen at the end of the group box. Door panels are either embossed or embedded panels. Some modern devices are flat surfaces door. The difference between these styles cabinet that the center rises above the level of the door frame, or is reduced below the frame.

Another consideration in choosing a style kitchen is to choose the wood, finish and door model is the best choice for architecture and decoration of the house. For example, colonies of the south with traditional decor is the perfect complement to the white finish with antique glass panels in relief. Black and white are a good choice in most homes. Style doors and handles option would mix well with almost any style of any home decor. In fact, many owners install all the cabinets without handles and knobs.

There are two ways to think and solve dangerous (convulsions). On the one hand, handles and knobs protect the wood cabinet. The hands are wet or dirty, rub off or damage the wood. On the other hand, some believe that the tabs at the expense of the beauty of wood and have no important function. Handles hazardous and are available in different materials and styles to suit all tastes.

Whatever your views on the handles and pulls, kitchen became a work of art. Kitchen cabinets styles are available to suit every individual taste, every architectural style of interiors. Black and white contrast with stainless steel kitchen appliances and colors.

Invest Offshore in UCIT Funds - Invest Offshore

What are UCITS Funds?

A growing number of investors are including hedge funds and other alternative strategies within their portfolios as a way of providing better portfolio diversification during adverse market conditions, as well as potentially boosting risk-adjusted returns over the long term.

However, the recent financial crisis and a number of high profile fraud cases have highlighted challenges associated with the traditional hedge fund structure, particularly the lack of liquidity, transparency and effective regulation. For retail investors, higher barriers to entry due to minimum investment size can also make gaining exposure to hedge funds difficult.

As a result, investors are increasingly turning to regulated open-ended funds, such as those covered by the European Union?s UCITS regulations, as a way to gain easier, more liquid, and more transparent exposure to alternative investment strategies.

UCIT Funds are not marketed to US Investors who Invest Offshore, nor are SIF: Specialized Investment Funds (3 Trillion invested worldwide), or AIFMD funds (16 Trillion is currently invested in AIFMD funds globally). Plink! Plink! Plink! Plinko! The popular "Price Is Right" game is celebrating its 30th anniversary this fall, and to mark the occasion, the game show is devoting an entire episode to it in September.

"When we realized it was the 30th anniversary of Plinko, we wanted to do something special," Mike Richards, the executive producer of "The Price Is Right," told BuzzFeed. "And (host) Drew (Carey) and I have always wanted to do an all-Plinko show. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to keep trotting it out."

The game, which debuted in 1983, offers contestants a chance to win up to $50,000. Players are given one free chip, then must try to win four more by correctly guessing the first or last digit of an item's price. The contestants then take their chips to the top of the giant board, and one by one, aim and release them with the hope they'll land on the $10,000 slot at the center. The other slots are $0, $100, $500 and $1,000.

The all-Plinko episode will air Sept. 27, during the premiere week for the show's 42nd season.

"The Price Is Right" airs weekdays on CBS.

So Villard will be playing football and taking AP courses as a post-graduate student at Trinity-Pawling (N.Y.) in September.

?I got some (Division I) looks during the season,? said Villard, who averaged 239.3 yards per game for the Panthers last fall. ?I really want to play at the next level. That?s the main reason for me going there.?

Before heading to New York, Villard will get another chance to showcase his abilities today in the inaugural Hall of Fame Classic Military Bowl at Rentschler Field. Kick-off is at 4:30 p.m.

Connecticut?s newest senior all-star football game pits the National Guard team versus the Marines team and National Guard head coach Jim Buonocore (Ledyard) is happy to have Villard on his side.

?(Derrick) stood out from the beginning at the combine in March,? said Buonocore. ?We identified him as one of the top backs there that day. We were very fortunate to be able to select him in the draft and he?s been doing a good job.?

Villard (6-1, 205) will be sharing the tailback duties with Justin Potts (Platt) and John Shannon (Bullard-Havens). The National Guard backfield also includes quarterbacks Tim Boyle (Xavier) and Mike Nicol (Wolcott), and fullback Austin Kingsbury (Windsor Locks).

?It?s fun and I like the atmosphere with all the players on the team,? Villard said. ?They have a different outlook on football in general. It?s a lot more competitive. Coming from my school our linemen are not as big as some of these kids. I think we have one kid who weighs 305 on this team, so there?s a big difference.?

Cromwell football coach Chris Eckert is one of Buonocore?s assistant coaches.

?It?s a unique opportunity for Derrick to be playing in the first game in this format,? said Eckert, who guided the Panthers to an 8-2 mark last season. ?I think it?s neat that he was recognized as one of the Top 100 players in Connecticut. The game is going to be a great experience for him. It will be something he?ll never forget.? Continued...

As a junior, Villard gained 2,125 yards and scored 27 rushing touchdowns while leading Cromwell to the Class S state championship game. His sensational 72-yard TD run helped Cromwell rally from a 13-0 deficit against Northwest Catholic in the Class S semifinals and propelled the Panthers to a 35-19 win.

Villard then gained 161 yards on 28 carries and scored three touchdowns against Holy Cross of Waterbury in the Class S finals. The Panthers, however, fell short 34-27 in a classic at Rentschler Field.

Villard?s senior year was equally impressive. He set a school record for most yards in a season with 2,393, surpassing 5,000 for his career, also a school record. Villard scored 22 touchdowns and was named to the New Haven Register?s All-State Third Team.

?He was our work horse,? said Eckert. ?A lot of times the staff and I said, ?let?s just put the ball in his hands and see what happens.? He definitely carried us. He?s going to be greatly missed.?

Added Buonocore, ?He?s a big, physical kid?a little bigger than I had thought in terms of what he looks like when the pads go on. He?s a hard worker. He?s picking up the offense. I think he?s going to have a big say in our success on Saturday.?
