The Call of Duty style online game created by the Chinese military in 2011 is now being made available to the public. Called Glorious Mission Online, it will come online for Chinese gamers tomorrow (Thursday) in a deal with gaming company Giant Interactive (NYSE:GA). The online gaming page is here.
Not entirely coincidentally, tomorrow is August 1, which is the anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People?s Liberation Army (PLA). It?s a good time for Chinese gamers to take up arms against those dastardly Americans ? in the game, of course.
Glorious Mission surfaced almost by accident in 2011 when a state TV program showed Chinese soldiers training using a computer game that no-one had seen before ? and they were apparently locked in mortal combat with the US army.
My colleague Charlie has been following the progress of the game ever since, and saw that enthusiastic gamers were pirating Glorious Mission last year ? so there?s a market for the game, it seems.
It?s not clear if the public version of the game is exactly the same as the one PLA soldiers have been using.
